About NewYork-Presbyterian

NewYork-Presbyterian is a prominent healthcare system in the greater New York area, operating 10 hospitals and nearly 200 clinics. It’s known for its high-quality care and innovative services, including telemedicine, and has partnerships with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University for advanced treatments. NewYork-Presbyterian has achieved significant medical advancements, such as the Pap test and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). With a dedicated team of 50,000 employees, it focuses on compassionate care, making it a go to choice for many families in Westchester.

State of The Art Labor Unit

Situated on the fourth floor of NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester in Bronxville, the newly designed labor and delivery unit offers an inviting and supportive environment for expectant families. This state-of-the-art facility features six spacious and private birthing suites, each thoughtfully designed to promote comfort, privacy, and an atmosphere conducive to family bonding.

In addition to the birthing suites, the newly renovated unit enhances the hospital’s already impressive maternity center, which is equipped with 23 modern postpartum rooms. Each room provides privacy and includes essential amenities to improve the overall patient experience. The birthing suites and postpartum rooms are designed with the needs of families in mind, featuring en-suite bathrooms, shower facilities, and comfortable beds specifically designed for partners to stay close during this important milestone.

The new labor and delivery unit has advanced technology to improve the birthing experience for mothers and their newborns. A key feature is the artificial intelligence system that monitors fetal heart rates and other essential health data for both the mother and baby. This technology allows for real-time monitoring, so any needed interventions can happen without delay.

Other impressive new features include the use of wireless fetal monitoring. Lightweight sensors attach to the mother’s abdomen, allowing her to move freely during labor while still keeping track of the baby’s health. The labor rooms focus on the mother’s comfort and include special tubs that promote relaxation. The unit also has two modern operating rooms for quick surgical care if complications arise. There is a private triage suite for initial assessments that ensures patient privacy.

The unit has advanced safety systems to look after babies. There is also strong breastfeeding support available in the hospital. Breastfeeding services that are offered in the hospital include lactation support groups after discharge so that new mothers feel that they are in community at all times. The hospital also provides parent support groups to help new families connect, share experiences, and receive guidance during early parenthood.

Dr. Mary D’Alton, obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons shared, “Every mother and baby deserve the highest quality of care, and we are enormously pleased to open this new unit with a fantastic team of Columbia physicians focused on providing a superb patient experience.”

NewYork-Presbyterian is making this vital improvement to the labor and delivery unit as part of its overall plan to enhance healthcare services in the Westchester community. NewYork-Presbyterian will also be rolling out a new state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility set to open in 2025 at 1111 Westchester Avenue in White Plains. This facility will provide a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including outpatient care, primary care, preventive care, and women’s health services.

Paul J. Dunphey, senior vice president and chief operating officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester, shared, “NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester’s new labor and delivery unit reflects our commitment to providing exceptional care to mothers, their newborns, and the entire family close to home in Westchester.”
