Westchester Family: How did the idea for Charcuterie By Brandon come about?
Charcuterie By Brandon: Two years ago, I made my first impromptu charcuterie board as my aunt’s housewarming gift. It immediately stole the spotlight at the party. Before I knew it, I had requests pouring in from friends, family, and neighbors. I was only 14 at the time, but I discovered a new passion for crafting these delightful platters. I’ve transformed my love for charcuterie into a small business using Instagram as my main platform.
Westchester Family: Were you always a charcuterie fan?
Charcuterie By Brandon: Not necessarily. Since childhood, I have found joy in the kitchen where I am able to tap into my creative side. I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with new recipes, exploring various cuisines, and trying new culinary trends. Because of this passion of mine, I became the designated chef in my family, and it shaped the teenager I am today. My family and friends always look forward to our gatherings, holidays, and important events so they can indulge in my culinary dishes.
Westchester Family: Why was it important to start Charcuterie By Brandon?
Charcuterie By Brandon: Mark Tain said, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I am so lucky that I have had the opportunity to turn my love for the craft into a professional endeavor.
Opening a small Instagram business not only provides personal fulfillment, but also allows me to save for my dream college. It has also taught me accountability and time management. Social
media has played a vital role in expanding my business. At first, my customers were all word of mouth but now I am able to share my culinary creations with a broader audience.
Westchester Family: How do you manage your business with your schoolwork?
Charcuterie By Brandon: Balancing textbooks and my new charcuterie business has been quite an adventure. I’m proud that I’ve successfully managed to keep up with my schoolwork and even maintain a spot on the Principal’s List, all while satisfying my clients. Having a structured routine and schedule helps ensure that I give adequate attention to both academic and business responsibilities.
My charcuterie business has played a crucial role in my personal growth, strengthening my organizational skills, and contributing to my overall self-development. Managing its challenges enhanced my ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt, shaping me significantly.
Westchester Family: What advice would you give to other teens who want to start a business?
Charcuterie By Brandon: For many teenagers out there thinking about starting a small business, my advice is: don’t let your age hold you back. Starting something new can be scary, but it’s also a fantastic way to learn and grow.
Westchester Family: How do you get the word out about your boards and what areas do you serve?
Charcuterie By Brandon: Currently, I’m serving my charcuterie boards mainly in Westchester County and New York City. My business has grown tremendously because of the support from my friends, neighbors, and community members purchasing charcuterie boards. The initial expansion of my business was powered by word of mouth. I expanded my services to schools and events, which contributed to the venture’s growth. Creating a business Instagram account has also helped me reach a larger audience. The support of Westchester community members has been critical in
laying a solid basis for my business, creating a wonderful cycle of opportunities.
Westchester Family: What does an ideal board look like to you?
Charcuterie By Brandon: For me, an ideal charcuterie board is a work of art made with care and great detail. It begins with a selection of the best cheeses and meats, that go well together to create a tasty variety of flavors for my customers. The little details matter the most. I take pride in creating a selection of fruits and jams that perfectly complement the charcuterie platter. Each part of my charcuterie board is thoughtfully put together, to create a delightful experience of flavors.
