According to Feeding Westchester, a non-profit agency that provides approximately 200,000 children, seniors, and families every month with food throughout Westchester over 15,000 Westchester children are experiencing food insecurity. During the summer, many children loose access to free meals and their sources of nourishment. To help fill the hunger gap, Feeding Westchester, the United Way of Putnam and Westchester, Mount Vernon Library, Ossining School District, and the Peekskill School District recently announced a partnership to provide food to low-income families of school-aged children.

Held in July and August, the Summer Feeding United Program is designed to help families whose children (kids and teens ages 18) qualify for free or a low-cost lunch to ensure that no child goes hungry this summer. Additionally, the program provides fresh produce, children’s books, and activities.

The program is limited to 750 households who live within a 15-mile delivery radius of the Mount Vernon Library, Ossining High School, or Peekskill High School. Participants must also be a resident of Elmsford, Larchmont, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Pelham, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe, White Plains, or Yonkers.

For those who qualify, a Child Nourishment Bag is given out every Wednesday from July 12th- August 23rd, which contains shelf-stable products such as milk, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, rice, and canned soup and stews. Distribution points include Camp Hope (New Rochelle); The Carver Center (Port Chester); The Family Resource Center (Peekskill); Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club; Yonkers Community Action Program; the Yonkers Riverfront Library; and more.

During the final week of the program, children will receive a free backpack with school supplies to get them ready for back to school.
