Take a Visit to the Galaxy in the Reimagined “Hip Hop Cinderella”
Your kids likely know the classic story of “Cinderella,” but do they know about the new musical version, “Hip Hop Cinderella?” Last week, we enjoyed checking out this reimagined and clever take on the classic at New Victory Theater in fun new story that was filled with humor, heart, and some incredible songs sung and performed by a talented cast who took us on the journey we knew with a cool twist.
Running from now until February 26th, this revamped version brings audiences to the future where Cinderella is living on Planet Zolla with her jealous stepmother, Lady Zurka, and selfish stepsisters, Zig and Zag. She spends her days cleaning with some help and inspirational commentary from her robot companion, Runka, who wants her to remember her dreams and love of rapping. Runka also holds a special place in Cinderella’s heart as it was the last robot she made with her father.
When the Prince announces he is looking for a rap star to unite the galaxy, Runka helps Cinderella teleport into the palace to compete in the Hip Hop Ball to help save the galaxy. She takes on a new persona as Ella C, complete with some killer gold high tops, and raps from her heart, getting the admiration of everyone, including her stepfamily. Runka notices how Cinderella becomes obsessed with the fame and teleports her back, except one this is missing: one of her gold sneakers. After one final battle, Cinderella realizes who she is, and unites with her family. This modern-day musical had us on the edge of our seats that was filled with unexpected turns, a dynamic cast, and a joyful positive message. We loved seeing this new world come to life with its cool backdrop, costumes, and use of technology that was a fun part of the show.
Prior to the show, families could enjoy a coloring station that was set up with markers, feathers, tape, and stickers. Kids had the chance design their own shoes, sneakers, or boots and sign a sneaker with their name.
Created with the Amas Musical Theatre and Hip Hp Musicals as digital theater, this version of the show marks its New York premiere that you and your family will love! The show is around 50 minutes and is ideal for kids ages 7 and up.
