Flip Circus Returns to Westchester for a Limited Run

Flip Circus Returns to Westchester for a Limited Run

With three kids of varying ages, it can be challenging to find things we all enjoying doing together. Recently, we took a trip to the Cross County Center to enjoy a fun afternoon at the circus! Created by the Vazquez family, Flip Circus has been coming to Westchester for the past three years with a whole new show for families to enjoy this year. Incredibly, the family has been creating performances for the past 50 years.

My kids and I sat front and center as we watched the world of magic and mystery come to life. Led by ringmaster Arthur Figueroa, the show features a consortium of lively performers and international acts. To kick off the show, audience members enjoyed silly antics from Brazil’s favorite clown, Bubi Guiner who showcased a range of comedic routines that had us all laughing in-between acts. In addition to his fun antics, Bubi Guiner also involved the audience by having some kids and parents come on the stage and interact.

Flip Circus Acts

Hasan Ansari from India

The acts themselves were breathtaking as we watched performers contort, flip, and move their bodies in stunning ways. Made up of international acts, we enjoyed watching Hasan Ansari from India use a Pole Mallakhamb to perform body-bending body techniques on a wooden pole as he effortlessly balanced.

There were also daring hula hoop acts and cool feats with weightlifting, as well as captivating swinging and dancing. We loved watching the talented Anastasia and Misha, from Ukraine. Incredibly, they showcased a gorgeous dance and acrobatics performance that was captivating and mesmerizing. There bodies flipped, turned, and moved with ease as we watched the power of the human strength.

Pavel Valla Bertini on the unicycle

One of our favorite acts was watching Pavel Valla Bertini, a fifth-generation circus performer from the Czech Republic. This act involved tons of creative skills as Pavel used a unicycle in a. jumping and bouncing act. This evolved as more and more unicylces came out that eventually led to a jaw-dropping 15-wheeled unicycle. Incredibly, he rode around the circus as we all watched in awe. To end this performance, Pavel and his three kids came out and rode around on their sweet kid-sized unicycles.

The circus also included some daring juggling acts. Families will love watching the talented Reyes Brothers from Chile as they quickly juggle a collection of hoops and rings – on the ground and way above!

Incredibly, the circus – and the dazzling acts – were also accompanied by a live band! It was so fun to have music accompany some of the daring acts that added to the vibrancy of the circus and its lively action.

How Performers are Picked

Westchester Family: How are the performers picked?

Flip Circus: The directors of the show travel every year to Europe where there are many circuses and circus festivals, and to other places around the world to see performers on other shows.  They scout performers and acts that they feel can be incorporated to create a spectacular show. Performers also reach out to us and send in videos of them in performance showing us what they can do. And the Directors choose acts based on what kind of show they want to present. Some are traditional acts that people expect to see at a circus and some are very new and unique. We are always looking to push the boundary of what makes circus great.

Westchester Family: What do the organizers hope families will get from the show?

Flip Circus:  We like to say to expect the unexpected. We create an environment for the family to enjoy, for the whole family to make fun memories and have extraordinary experiences.

Westchester Family: Why do you think circuses are an important family-friendly event?

Flip Circus:  The circus remains important because it’s something that you don’t get every day. It’s a live event with amazing things happening right in front of you rather than on a screen, and it’s family-friendly.

In between acts, there was also intermission where families could take pictures with some of the performances and a stuffed lion. There are also concessions and merchandise for sale, as well as having porta potty-style bathrooms outside of the circus tent.

Additionally, the show does have flashing lights and loud noises, which might affect those with any sensitivities. Finally, the Flip Circus doesn’t include the use of any animals. Rather, they focus on incredibly bold and daring human feats, as well as jaw-dropping acts that you and your kids have to see to believe.
