Playland was officially declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Families continue to enjoy the more than 50 rides for children, youngsters, and adults. There’s also free entertainment, a beach, pool, boardwalk and pier, lake boating, picnic area, and mini golf. If you are at least 48” tall be sure to get on the famous Dragon Coaster, ride the 3,400 feet of track and plunge into a 128-foot drop that hurls you into the mouth of the dragon! The Kiddyland section is dedicated to the youngest visitors with rides that are age appropriate. The Rye Arts Center is a not-for-profit organization that offers a wide range of classes for children of all ages. Students can explore the visual arts with drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography classes. Performing art classes are offered in music, ballet, dance, and musical theater. New classes are being added all the time. This summer ther are new offerings such as Stitching & Embroidery on Plastics and Book Sculptures. There are also S.T.E.A.M. classes in Robotics, 3D printing and coding. This summer kids can try Animation Week with Minecraft or Minecraft 3D printing classes. They also offer a pre-K program called Creative Kids. The Center has been operating since 1960 and continues to strengthen and expand their programming. The LOOK! This 19,000 square foot facility offers recreational and competitive gymnastics for boys and girls. The program starts with Romperee, a parent & child program. Parents say this Ranch offers a nice introduction to horseback riding for kids. The Junior Wrangler program, for kids under 48” tall, allows parents to lead their child’s pony if they’d like. These gentle “ponies” are retired trail riding horses that like moving at a slower pace. As kids age they can move up to The Walk Ride program then to intermediate (walk and trot) and advanced (walk, trot, canter). There are also horse-drawn wagon rides, horse shoeing demos, and if you are making a family getaway there’s a full children’s center, a water park, and more.

This 33-acre, not-for-profit, woodland preserve offers trails, a pond, gardens, a live animal museum, and indoor exhibits. There are many family programs held during the week and on weekends as well as a parent and child preschool program. There’s even summer camp! The Live Butterfly Exhibit through Aug. 3 is especially popular. Make sure to take the kids to the Nature’s Discovery Playground, an outdoor playground suitable for all ages. Here kids can climb, slide, and swing in a natural setting. The tree house-like structures are magical.
