Editor’s Note (June 2011)

There may still be three weeks or so left to the school year, but if your children are anything like mine was, school is technically over. Yes there are tests to take, art projects to bring home and desks to clear out, but young minds have checked out with the first rush of warm air. Can you blame your youngsters?

Everyone is saying that this past winter was the worst ever – too long, too cold, too everything. So it only stands to reason that we should be extra excited about this summer. So let the school year end on an up note and get busy planning a really nice summer.

With the arrival of sizzling outdoor weather comes all manner of outdoor fun. Our calendar of events lists more activities than you can possibly do in a month. But, just like a grocery store with packed shelves, it’s so nice to have a great selection from which to choose.

June also celebrates Father’s Day. Check our calendar for fun outings and then read about some of our local dads. Read our interview with Chappaqua’s Matthew Van Fleet, The New York Times best-selling children’s book author and all around great guy. If you’re not having fun reading to your toddler you have to see what Van Fleet is doing to make reading together a happy, interactive experience.

And if you’d like a laugh, read local dad Bruce Myint’s humorous lamentation on being a Gen X dad. Share his piece, Reality Bites a Gen X Dad, with a dad you know and watch him laugh and nod in agreement.

And talking of summer, if you are thinking about sending your child to summer camp you should make your plans now. There’s still a little time to sign up. See our special camp section featuring some super camps and programs that can offer your youngsters a great summer experience.

Happy Father’s Day!
