How the Bright Canary App Helps Parents Teach Kids How to Safely Use the Internet

We are living in a fast-paced digital world. Many of our tweens and teens may use it more than we do with daily communication on social media and online searching. While there are parental controls, it can be challenging to see exactly what kids are seeing/posting.

Enter the Bright Canary, a new app that helps parents teach their kids how to safely use the Internet. The app allows you to receive alerts, reports, and advice powered by their Built-in AI chatbot “Ask the Canary” feature that provides parents with instant advice tailored to any difficult topic they want to discuss with their child, covering the gamut from online violence to cyberbullying.

How it works is simple. You download the BrightCanary on your phone, which connects to your kids’ Google or social accounts. The app then tracks what your kids are watching and posting and provides an alert if you need to get involved. Bright Canary uses AI filers that looks through searches, DMs, videos and comments to provide alerts around postings or videos related to violence, racism, alcohol, or self-harm. Alerts not only allow you to be aware of what your child is viewing or posting but this can open up a conversation about why it’s not appropriate.

Parents will need their kids’ passwords and usernames so the Bright Canary app can link up with their child’s apps and accounts. The app also provides helpful articles on how to ask for passwords. Some insightful tips include creating an open dialogue by asking them questions about what they like to watch online, and be clear about how you plan to use the app. Bright Canary also suggest having a check-in time after you use it for a few weeks and to keep the dialogue open with your kids. The app also provides great advice/articles about what age kids should get a phone, parental guidelines on YouTube, creating a digital device contract with your kids, and much more. It is also key to establish ground rules for technology/social media use, in general, and limit the apps they use, depending on their age.

While technology isn’t slowing down anytime soon, it’s good to know that there are services out there that can help regulate what our children are consuming so that they can be safe and conscious online while also keeping the communication with you.
