How to Participate in Westchester’s Household Recycling Day

Westchester's Household Recycling Day

Westchester’s Household Recycling Day

Families across Westchester County are invited to participate in Westchester’s Household Recycling Day (HRD). Held on October 29th from 9:00am-3:00pm, the fourth annual event takes place at 149 Jackson Avenue, Yonkers, NY. The event is a great way for families to recycle and get rid of items that they don’t use or need. This year also includes new acceptable drop-off items to the program, such as clothing, footwear, handbags, linens, leather, small area rugs and more!

Families can bring the following items for the household recycling day:

  • Household cleaning products
  • Automotive fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, but not motor oil)
  • Flammable liquids (kerosene, butane, lighter fluid, turpentine)
  • Metal, jewelry, and furniture polishes and waxes; wood preservatives
  • Fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides
  • Photographic and swimming pool chemicals
  • Batteries – only lithium, vehicle, rechargeable, or button cell
  • Textiles such as footwear, clothing, linens, leather, hats, small area rugs, and handbags – must be in a plastic bag. Full list of accepted textiles can be found here.
  • Latex and oil-based paint, wood stains
  • Fluorescent light bulbs & CFLs
  • Fire extinguishers
  • BBQ propane tanks (up to 20 lbs.)
  • Mercury containing devices (thermometers and thermostats)
  • Electronic waste (TVs, computer monitors and towers)
  • Expired or unwanted medications, both OTC and prescription
  • Personal documents for shredding (limit of four (4) file-size boxes per household)
  • Tires

Note: non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, carbon zinc batteries, motor oil, smoke detectors, cell phones, explosives (flares, fireworks, ammunition), construction debris and hypodermic needles are not accepted for this recycling day. Additionally, waste from local businesses, schools, or other institutions are not accepted.

Additionally, Westchester residents will be able to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications in their original containers. There will be a drive-thru and drop-off option as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Those who can’t attend Westchester’s Household Recycling Day in person can visit DEF’s Household Material Recovery Facility at the Grasslands Campus at 15 Woods Road, Valhalla, NY. The facility is open year-round, on an appointment-only basis.

There is no fee to participate, but families should pre-register if they have 100 pounds or more of solid material, or 25 gallons or more of liquid. To pre-register, call the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425.
