While not a public holiday, Grandparents Day is in fact a national holiday. President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation on Aug. 3, 1978 declaring the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.
This year National Grandparents Day is celebrated on Sept. 8. Help your children acknowledge the importance of their grandparents and honor the wisdom and strength of older generations.
A simple, thoughtful gesture can go a long way to making a connection between grandparent and child. Consider sending grandparents your child’s homemade card or drawing, make a photo book of a child’s and grandparents’ fun times together, FaceTime a personal greeting, and if grandparents are close by consider spending the day together.
Some families who have lost their grandparents encourage their child to name an honorary grandparent to recognize there are other people in
our lives that can fill in for generations gone by.
