Just ask Dana DeRuvo Hanner and Susan Kleiman, two Westchester-based moms who meet while they were spending time with their sons with special needs at the Center for Discovery in Harris, New York.
The women developed a fast friendship and shared a passion to reach out to other moms caring for children with special needs. Together they started a private Facebook group, Special Needs Moms of Westchester, that now has some 19,000 moms that log in to discuss challenges, get doctor referrals, locate resources and provide each other with support and encouragement.
They found the need for a special community was so great they recently created a website, specialmomsnetwork.com, to further expand their reach into the special needs community.
This membership-based network offers access to the Facebook group, a resource guide, meet-up events, educational meetings, playgroups, social outings, tips, articles, blogs and recipes from the Network as well as a copy of Dana DeRuvo’s Hanner’s book The Ties That Bind.
