Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual, international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities aims to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause and prevention.

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
  • Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.

  • Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1 percent of breast cancers occur in men.

  • Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women.

  • Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women.

  • About 10 percent of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

It’s time to get involved. Help raise funds for groundbreaking breast cancer research, life- saving education, and critical patient services by walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Westchester.

Participate in Making Strides of Westchester, a 9.8-mile walk at Manhattanville College, 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase New York on October 16, 2016. Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. For more information and to register see makingstrides.acsevents.org.
