Greenburgh Nature Center

Nestled in the hustle and bustle of Central Park Avenue in Scarsdale is the Greenburgh Nature Center (GNC), a 33-acre woodland preserve with trails, ponds, natural wild life and animal exhibits.

We Arrive

When our family walked up to the doors we were greeted by a friendly and helpful staff member at the front desk. It was our first time here and we didn’t know what to expect. We quickly realized that there was more to do and see than we thought. It was a little too cold to walk on some of the trails, but in the springtime we will definitely come back for that part of the adventure. Meanwhile, between the indoor exhibits and the other outdoor fun, we didn’t know where to begin.

We decided to scope out the indoor first floor. We saw a couple of fish tanks, one that holds eels and the other had different fish. “The eels are amazing,” said my 11-year-old daughter Sammi, as she took out her iPod and started videoing them. “Look at them swim!” We then walked into another room that was a beautiful greenhouse with fascinating plants, flowers and interesting cacti, including a Christmas cactus that was in full bloom for the season. “Awesome, I have never seen a real cactus before, this is so cool,” said Skylher, my 8-year-old. Some of the plants had leaves that were incredibly big and green.

Indoor Petting Zoo

As we ventured upstairs we entered the “petting zoo.” There were many animals for us to look at. The young members of staff were very eager to offer help to touch the animals, which included an owl, ringneck dove, prickly hedgehog, chinchilla (which was so soft), turtles, ferrets, a huge guinea pig named Barley and we cannot forget Elvis, the sweet and big iguana. My daughters were a little hesitant to touch some of them, but the GNC crew reassured them that it was OK.

Mini Farm

As we made our way outside to check out the animals, we noticed that we were entering a “mini farm.” The outdoor exhibit features a live animal museum where there are goats, sheep and turkeys. In another section there were a couple of peacocks. On the other side there was a cage where a gray rabbit was sleeping comfortably. In addition to the farm animals, there was a prairie dog house, but we were told they only come out when they want to, so we didn’t see them. Next time we might be lucky.

And most amazing of all, in their own enormous cage that overlooked the crisp woodland trails, were the Bald eagles. No photo does them justice. The children were in awe of their size and stature.

New Playground

Even though it was cold outside, I had told my family to bring their winter coats, hats and mittens because I had read that the GNC had just built a new playground. It was spectacular and offered a good dose of fresh air. My husband and I sat in the “adult swing” while watching them play. Even my oldest daughter enjoyed climbing and swinging on the equipment. “I am having the greatest time at this playground, I wish we could come here every day,” said my 7-year-old and youngest daughter, Sasha.

Nature’s Discovery Playground is a nature-themed playground made entirely of wood. There are very creative sculptured tunnels, play nests, swings and slides. The playground features age-appropriate sections so all children can be entertained.

Programs

The GNC has many events for children and adults. Each month they have a schedule of activities that include themed events for the month or season, as well as other activities. Most weekend programs are family-friendly and for all ages.

Children and parents can also attend a drop-in program, which offers an hour of nature. It involves indoor and outdoor fun (weather permitting) and a small fee applies. They also offer camps and birthday parties.
