Entertainment: As the team doctor for several local high school sports teams I want to ensure that everyone – parents, coaches and players – keeps kids’ health and safety foremost in their minds. Basketball is the most common team sport for both girls and boys in the United States and while sports activity clearly has health and fitness benefits, most sports have inherent injury risks and the highest rates of injury occur in sports – such as basketball – that involve contact and collisions as well as repetitive motions. The Diabetes Diet

Health: The volume of statistics about childhood obesity has exploded, right along with America’s waistlines. Around 20 percent of kids ages 6-11 are now obese, putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and a host of other health problems. Family F.Y.I. (Aug. 2011)

Parties: Save the date! On Sept. 10, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center will be the lead sponsor for the TOUGHKids Triathlon, an event that is a part of the TOUGHKids Triathlon weekend festival. Depending on the age group, the Triathlon consists of swims ranging from 20 to 200 yards, biking from one to five miles and running from 100 yards to one mile. Children ages 4 to 14 can compete at the event held in Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson. Read more…
