A Piece OF Cake

Entertaining a group of kids happily for a few hours can make the most accomplished adult uneasy. Even a simple home party needs planning and organization to ensure that it goes well and makes a lasting impression that will be cherished by friends and family and most of all, your child. Astronomy Activities for Kids

Technology: While almost every child can recite this poem by heart, for many, their knowledge of astronomy ends there. That’s a shame because stargazing has so much to offer. “Astronomy is a great hobby that’s rich with opportunities. Children learn how to observe, describe and interpret the world around us,” says Katie Moore, astronomy educator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Wondering how you can introduce your family to the wonders of astronomy? Then, read on. Read more…

Editor's Note (April 2011)

Relationships: There is nothing more magical than the open sky. And it’s hardly a surprise that children are especially amazed by the wonders up above us. On windy days we’d marvel at how fast the clouds would move, and on still summer afternoons we’d be just as surprised that they hardly moved at all. As she got older I made a little book of the different types of clouds; cirrus (wispy), cumulus (chunky) and stratus (layers). We would take it with us on long car trips and she’d play official cloud identifier. Over the years the daytime sky provided us with lots of good, old old-fashioned – and free – fun. Read more…

Purchased by Westchester County in 1925, the reservation encompasses more than 4,000 acres and was designated a Biodiversity Reserve Area in 2001. While the park features more than 35 miles of hiking trails, cross-country skiing trails and a sledding hill during the winter months, as well as 29 open-face lean-tos that are available for camping and an art gallery, we drove deep into the park with a specific destination in mind – The Trailside Nature Museum.
