First Look: The New Memorial Field in Mount Vernon

We love seeing sporting events and concerts with our family, but there aren’t many places to do this locally…until now. Enter the new Memorial Field in Mount Vernon, a long-awaited construction and revitalization project that has been in the works for the past 12 years. Built in the 1930s, the field was the location for a Coca-Cola commercial, graduations, a Jackson 5 concert, and countless other community and recreational events. Over the years, the space declined where, by 2010 (right before it closed) it was essentially a mud pit.

The space recently received a proper soft re-opening, marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Westchester County Executive George Latimer and City of Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.

George Latimer, noted: “I want this project to be a symbol of real change within the City of Mount Vernon. A symbol that shows that what seems impossible is possible if government can put ego aside and work together. I graduated from High School on this field, and I look forward to working with Mayor Patterson-Howard as we watch the next generation of Mount Vernon’s leaders make their own memories on this field.”

At the newly-improved Memorial Field, you’ll find cutting-edge amenities such as a state-of-the-art sound system, a beautiful press box, a laser-directed LED lighting located above on the stadium, and a stunning turf field retrofitted to accommodate several sports.

The field also features seating for nearly 4,000 people to enjoy football, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. There is also an expanded track with eight lanes for walking, running, track and field events, like the triple, long jump, and the discus. Guests will be able to enjoy three tennis courts and a skate park, which is actually the first skate park in Mount Vernon.

While there is still some construction underway, there will be a few opening events this fall before a full opening in the spring.

The first sporting event in this new field will be played by the Mount Vernon Knights on Saturday, September 24th at 1:30pm. This is the first football game played in this arena since 2007.

Memorial Field is dedicated to the restored and rededicated to the memory of brave men and women veterans by the people of Westchester County.
