Irish Soda Bread Recipe

You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy the many delicious foods that hail from Ireland. And if your family is lucky enough you will round them up to have fun making this traditional soda bread.

Irish soda bread is a great accompaniment to an Irish-themed meal, toasted for breakfast, as an after-school snack or even packed in a lunch box.

Mrs. Green’s Markets shares their take on this classic treat.

IRISH SODA BREAD

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup quick cooking Irish oatmeal, plus 1 tablespoon
1/3 cup steel-cut Irish oatmeal
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
6 tablespoons of  butter cut into small pieces 2 1/4 cups buttermilk

Directions

  1. 1) Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly dust a baking sheet with flour and set aside.

  2. 2) In a large bowl whisk together the all- purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, quick cooking Irish oatmeal, steel-cut Irish oatmeal, sugar and baking soda. Make sure it’s well blended.

  3. 3) Using a pastry cutter, two knives, or your fingertips, work in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Form a well in the center and using a wooden spoon, gradually stir in buttermilk. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead to form the dough, about 1 minute.

  4. 4) Shape dough into ball. Place dough in center of the prepared baking sheet. Flatten dough into a 1 1/2 inch thick disk. Dip large sharp knife in flour and cut across halfway through center of dough so that it will easily break into quarters when baked. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon quick cooking oatmeal over top.

  5. 5) Bake until bread is nicely browned and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes (check after 20 minutes, and if browning too quickly, reduce heat to 350 degrees).

  6. 6) Remove from oven and allow to  cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter alongside corned beef and cabbage or toast for breakfast.
