Back to …

Yes, it’s that time of year again. I’ll echo the comment that no doubt everyone at the bus stop is saying: “Where did the summer go?” Wherever it went, one thing is for sure – it’s gone.

No need to mope about because September is a call to action. The sooner you get organized the better chance you have at a smooth transition to the new school year. Read “Back to School! Setting Your Child Up for Success”  by Lydia H. Soifer, Ph.D. for important tips on how to help your child make this a great year.

And although there will be plenty of attention on national issues this fall as we enter the final stages of the presidential race, don’t ignore what’s happening locally. Our article, “Get Involved! Make Your Voice Heard This School Year” by David Neilsen explores how and why you should get involved at your child’s school. Neilsen, a PTA President, says there are many ways you can affect the quality of your child’s education. And none of his suggestions involve baking. Learn how you can make a positive and productive impact!

Don’t miss our coverage of one of the most popular seasonal activities in the northeast – apple picking. If you have never been don’t waste a minute, get out to an orchard now. It’s great fun and children like eating fruit that they have hand picked. Afterwards invite the entire family to make the non-bake apple pie recipe we are featuring from Whole Foods Market. As an extra plus it’s gluten and dairy free.

Which brings up to another important subject, childhood obesity. Medical experts are discovering that there is a link between childhood obesity and childhood liver disease. Read the special report by Richard Rosencrantz, M.D., a pediatric hepatolgist at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. If you value your child’s health this is something you can help your child avoid.

Of course there are plenty of interesting events and activities this month as well. Be sure to check out our September calendar that Susan Goldberg has packed with an enormous amount of fun.

Happy New School Year,
