UJA: Families Feeding Families

Youngsters and their parents joined with the UJA-Federation of New York’s Scarsdale Women’s Philanthropy as part of the organization’s Families Feeding Families initiative. During the morning event, volunteers decorated bags and created holiday cards to deliver warm wishes to recipients. The bags were filled with a variety of foods and other goods, such as paper towels and sponges, which cannot be purchased through the Food Stamp Program. The Bronx Jewish Community Council, a beneficiary agency of UJA-Federation, delivered the bags to those in need. To learn more about UJA-Federation of New York, visit www.ujafedny.org.

Young Chefs at Blythedale

More than 140 Girl Scouts from troops in Westchester and the Bronx were at Blythedale Children’s Hospital for hands-on, fun-filled interactive workshops in areas such as occupational, physical and speech therapies, as well as services for the visually impaired. They also shared creative ideas for nutritious meals. The “Challenges to Opportunities Workshop” was developed by Girl Scout Troop 2746 in partnership with Blythedale.

The winners of the Young Chefs Recipe Contest were announced at the workshop. The recipe contest, sponsored by Blythedale and Kohl’s department stores, invited individual girl scouts as well as entire troops from Westchester and the Bronx to submit their recipes for healthy and nutritious meals in three categories: breakfast, brown-bag lunches and snacks. The entries were judged by a panel including award-winning Chef Anthony Goncalves of Restaurant 42 in White Plains, Celebrity Chef Wade Burch of the Food Network show Chopped and Blythedale Dietitian Marie Roth. As part of the afternoon’s festivities representatives from Kohl’s presented a check for $200,422 to Blythedale for the hospital’s Eat Well, Be Well Nutrition Outreach Program. Blythedale Children’s Hospital, 95 Bradhurst Ave., Valhalla. 592-7555.
